{"id":1716,"date":"2016-01-05T18:58:37","date_gmt":"2016-01-05T18:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atmintiesvietos.azuolynobiblioteka.lt\/routes\/alternative-guide-kaunas-old-town\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T11:22:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T11:22:26","slug":"alternative-guide-kaunas-old-town","status":"publish","type":"routes","link":"https:\/\/atmintiesvietos.azuolynobiblioteka.lt\/en\/routes\/alternative-guide-kaunas-old-town\/","title":{"rendered":"ALTERNATIVE GUIDE: KAUNAS OLD TOWN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This alternative guide is based on the photos taken by the photo artist Romualdas Po\u017eerskis from 1974 to 1983 and his memories about them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Back then, still a resident of \u017daliakalnis, Po\u017eerskis started capturing the life in Kaunas Old Town: its yards, streets, small and large stories of people in this area.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>These photos capture now-gone or radically altered signs of the Old Town (streets, yards), moments from his life (celebrations, accidents, everyday fragments), brutal invasion of the Soviet Period, and characters known to most residents of Kaunas from that time: painter Kampas or the woman with a band on her nose who is still alive in the memories of the residents of Kaunas from the older generation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This route is dedicated to the lost Old Town, people who are no longer here, the hushed buzz of trolleys and vehicles, forgotten lifestyle, destroyed or restored yards, buildings and such places like a disappeared street that would so meaningfully connect the Old Town with the river.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Today these photos turned into certain spatial reference points that allow for some to anchor in their fading memories, while for others it allows to look for the remnants of the past in the yards, in the walls of buildings that have not been restored yet, and the landscape of altered streets. Therefore, in some way, these photos are some sort of reconstruction of the past, because they all serve to describe the past time and connect a place with a memory.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The route will become longer&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Romualdas Po\u017eerskis: \u201cHow did I end up in the Old Town?\u00a0 I think I was guided by a certain motivation. When I undertook creative photography, I observed a lot of photographies by Lithuanian authors and noticed that they do not capture the city, its image is fragmented, from afar, featuring some architectural details, but I did not see any photo that would be taken inside a yard, and where a photo camera would communicate with people. And I became interested in it, because American photo albums were available at that time (we used to go to see them in Riga, you could not see them in Lithuania). And I understood that they featured the so-called street photography. New York photography, Bruce Davidson published \u201cEast 100th Street\u201d and there are also very old traditions like French post-war street photos.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Town was then&#8230; like a hole, where no one wanted to live&#8230; Lots of noise, weird people, homeless and drunks sleeping on the streets. Cars were going back and forth, as well as the heavy traffic of buses, trolleys, trucks&#8230; And the Old Town was so completely undesirable and disliked by everyone, because all life was going on in Laisv\u0117s Al\u0117ja.
