About the project

https://atmintiesvietos.azuolynobiblioteka.lt/ is an interactive repository of the collective memory of the city of Kaunas and the Kaunas region. It is intended for everyone interested in Kaunas–from city enthusiasts and history lovers to students, researchers, and and all those for whom the history, present, and cultural identity of Kaunas are an important part of life.

On this website, Kaunas’s urban landscape is presented as a map of collective memory. Buildings, streets, courtyards, squares, monuments, museums, public spaces, and other urban sites reveal the city’s hidden, forgotten, or newly reimagined past. It is in these places of memory that the markers of our identity can be found, along with the answers to questions such as: Who are we? What kind of city do we live in? What stories do we inherit, and which do we pass on?

The website compiles academic, journalistic, and literary texts; as well as research studies; artistic and scholarly projects; photographs; audio and video recordings. It also features a virtual map of Kaunas’s places of memory, presenting the city not only through facts, dates, or institutional narratives, but also through people’s memories.

Many cities, neighbourhoods, and communities around the world—united by a shared historical, collective, and cultural memory—maintain memory databases and interactive websites. Here in Kaunas, we are building similar connections between personal experiences and the city’s cultural heritage.We invite you to explore the city’s memory and living history–not only to know about it, but also to remember.

In 2026, an agreement was signed between the project’s founder, Dr. Daiva Price, and the Oak Grove Library, transfering the Places of Memory (lt. „Atminties vietos“) project to the library. From then on, the Oak Grove Library—the largest public library in Lithuania—has been responsible for ensuring the project’s continuity, as well as for collecting, developing, and updating the virtual archive of Kaunas’s collective memory.

This transfer marks a new phase in the project’s development. The memory materials collected to date will continue to be preserved, expanded, and made accessible to the public, while the project will remain an open platform for the city’s memory, cultural heritage, community narratives, and educational initiatives in Kaunas and the Kaunas region.

It is hoped that the project, now carried forward by the Oak Grove Library, will become not only a place for preserving the city’s memory and archiving testimonies of the past, but also an active platform for urban change, visions, civic initiatives, cultural imagination, and community engagement, helping to shape the future of Kaunas.

However, the most important part of this archive remains the stories of the city’s residents. We invite you to become co-creators of this virtual archive and share your memories of places, events, celebrations, fragments of everyday life, or personal stories about Kaunas that are meaningful to you! You can contribute your memories by sending them to [kaunistika@azuolynobiblioteka.lt] or by submiting them through the specially designed online form at https://atmintiesvietos.azuolynobiblioteka.lt/.

We also invite scholars, researchers, artists, and memory institutions—including museums, archives, libraries, and educational and cultural organizations—to contribute to the creation and further development of the website.

By submitting information, memories, stories, and/or related materials, you agree to transfer this information to the Oak Grove Library without compensation and grant it a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, and perpetual right to use these materials for the purposes of preserving, developing, and sharing Kaunas’s collective memory. No compensation will be provided for such use.

This right includes the ability to reproduce, digitize, store, organize, publicly display, publish, distribute, and make the materials available online, including on the website www.atmintiesvietos.lt, the Oak Grove Library’s website and social media accounts. The materials provided may also be used in exhibitions, publications, and projects related to culture, education, local history, research, and the dissemination of knowledge.

By submitting this information, you also consent to its processing, organization, and storage in the Oak Grove Library’s collections and information systems for an indefinite period, to the extent necessary to fulfil the objectives of cultural memory, local history, education, research, and information dissemination.

The Oak Grove Library, acting as the data controller, processes your personal data based on this consent. The personal data that may be processed includes your first name, last name, contact details, relationship to the submitted materials, and other data specified in the submission form. This data is processed for the purposes of identifying the person submitting the materials, ensuring proper attribution, ensuring the appropriate publication of the submitted materials, and contacting you regarding their correction or use.

When submitting information, you may choose whether you consent to the publication of your first and last name alongside the submitted materials. If you do not provide such consent, the materials may be published without your first and last name, provided that this does not conflict with the nature of the materials or the purposes for which they are used.

You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time by submitting a written request to the Oak Grove Library. The withdrawal of consent will not affect the lawfulness of the processing of your personal data or the use of materials provided prior to the withdrawal of consent.
